Good Wood Bear
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (September, 1985)
Author: Bijou Le Tord
Average review score:

good will bear
Just as I fell in love with the simple illustrations of Rabbit Seeds, So I fell in love with Good Wood Bear. The story unfolds itself in its elegant craftiness and firm foundations. The story invites young people not only to work hard, but to work hard for the sake of others. I love the generous spirit which fills this story. Bear obviously is not making the bird house for the sake of making a bird house. He is making it because he values hard work and giving to others. For children, this book has many implications. It has the ability to inspire children's imaginations because they must fill in the minor details that Le Tord deliberately left out. It also can inspire a work ethic and pride in one's craft. The final illustration--or diagram rather--is an excellent invitation for young people to use their hands as they use their minds. Though this book may be hard to obtain, since it is out of stock, I do recommend searching for a copy of this book. I think Bear and Goose would be very happy if you did.

Good Wood Routers

Authors: Albert Jackson and David Day
Average review score:

A practicale book devoted to the ELU Router
I had the chance to read the book in French and I must say that there are not a lot of books like that ( there is more than 40 in English, lucky you!) written in French . It is possible for for me to compare because I read some of them in English... In fact you will discovre a very clearly written book, with plenty of very nice colored illustrations, changin from the B/W illustration of some, a logic distribution of the chapters. In other words I recommand it absolutely. Charles Rydel

Goodbye Vietnam
Published in Hardcover by Omonomany (01 April, 2003)
Author: Robert W. Wood
Average review score:

Vividly evokes a fictional yet highly realistic memory
Wood is an impressively written novel that vividly evokes a fictional yet highly realistic memory of a Marine who served in combat in Vietnan. Offer the reader a compellingly dark, gritty, no-holds-barred view of a truly hellish war, and the toll it took on human life and decency, Goodbye Vietnam belongs on the shelf along side such seminal and memorable works at Joseph L. Heller's "Catch 22" and Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead".

Goodnight Prayers (Oaktree Wood)
Published in Hardcover by Abingdon Press (August, 2001)
Authors: Alan Parry and Linda Parry
Average review score:

Share a nice bedtime prayer with your small child
This book is simply wonderful. I have been looking for a book with some nice bedtime prayers and this is it! On each page, the book has a scene of a different forest animal preparing for bed, followed by a prayer (written by someone else, I think). The book is set up so that you can do just one prayer a night, if you like. The prayers themselves are lovely, and small children can really relate to them.

Grant Wood and Little Sister Nan : Essays and Remembrances
Published in Paperback by Penfield Books (31 May, 2000)
Authors: Julie Jensen McDonald, Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret, and Nanwood Graham
Average review score:

Essays and Rememberances
"Grant Wood and Little Sister Nan draws Nan Wood Graham out of the larger tapestry of Wood's life and gives definition to her loyal support of her brother and her own achievements. She was a pathfinder whose contributions extend into areas that cannot be easily measured." writes Mary Bennett, Special Collections Coordinator for the State Historical Society of Iowa.

Julie Jensen McDonald pieces together the spirit of the Wood family during the demanding and daring times of the 1920s and 30s, capturing the substance that nurtured the talent, resourcefulness, and fierce loyalty demonstrated by Nan Wood Graham until her death in 1990 at the age of ninety-one years. Intriguing and enchanting details, garnered from the vast collection of Grant Wood memorabilia now held by the Davenport Art Museum, and other sources, profile the woman behind the face in American Gothic. Nan tells how she was wooed by her brother into posing for the painting by a promise that no one would recognize her. As the Gothic couple became one of the most celebrated images in art history, she speaks candidly of the joy as well as the vulnerability of "celebrity," including the innumerable parodies which depict a wide range of social conditions.

Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret, Penfield Press publisher, presents a pictorial documentary along with a"Passages in Time" of the Wood family, and rare insights from friends, acquaintances and admirers of Nan and her brother Grant Wood.

Essays by friends and close associates reveal the extent of Nan Wood Graham's devotion to the memory of her brother and to the places where they spent their early years. Personal letters and other commentaries provide a view of her fondness for time and place: early years in Anamosa, Iowa, growing up in Cedar Rapids, the generosity of friends in the Amana Colonies in times of great need, and the support of friends and mentors in the Iowa City and Davenport areas. Nan was often cast as a "fierce guardian of the truths of her brother's life." The Epilogue "Myths About Grant Wood," based on several years of research with Nan and other sources by the late John Zug, presents some truths to dispel many of the myths that often accompany notoriety.

This book adds a dimension to the woman in American Gothic. At age eighty three, Nan said the painting saved her life from being drab. Even though she didn't think the "painted" lady looked anything like her when it was first displayed, she had now decided that: "We look a lot alike. She's really become me."

A Guide to Hopi Katsina Dolls
Published in Paperback by Rio Nuevo Publishers (September, 2000)
Authors: Kent McManis and Robin Stancliff
Average review score:

A Valuable Resource
If you have an interest in Hopi Katsina dolls, this is the book for
you ... at a price everyone can afford. Having been in contact with
the author several months prior to the book's publication, it was
eagerly anticipated. The "finished product" does not
disappoint. As a collector, judge at several major juried shows and
owner of a Native American Trading Company, Kent McManis knows his
stuff! I have only one complaint ... I wish the book were at least
TWICE it's size. At 56 pages .... I hope the author will consider a
second book on the subject as he has with Zuni fetishes. This is the
first book I have found which traces the katsina cycle and includes
the doll on the SAME page where it is discussed. This aspect alone
makes the book a "keeper". Robin Stancliff is to be
commended for 70 beautiful photographs of both contemporary / action
pieces and historic / traditional katsinam as well. If you have never
seen the work of MASTER carvers like Brian and Ronald Honyouti, Cecil
Calnimptewa, Ros George, Loren Phillips and Dennis Tewa ... add this
book to your library. I'm looking forward to VOLUME II, Mr
McManis. Thank you for sharing such a valuable resource with your
readers.
